Portugal Road Trip: NazarƩ & Praia de Mira
Two stops on our Portugal summer road trip in NazarƩ and Praia de Mira.
It was hard to leave Peniche and Baleal, because it was such a nice area, and there was almost always somewhere to catch a little wave every day (and probably because of the pasteis de nata every morning at our guest house!) But we were headed north and looking to explore more coastal towns along the way.
We decided to stop to check out NazarĆ©, not knowing what weād find at this time of year when the famous big wave spot isnāt active.
We found that A LOT of other people had the same idea! The town was packed, with a mass pilgrimage of visitors making their way down the walking road to the surf museum and vantage point. We parked at the top of the hill and joined them.
Along the path there was a minstrel playing Ed Sheeran songs and this half-man, half-deer surfing statue.
Then we made it to the overlook. Even though it was only 4-6 ft that day and not surfable, you could feel the power in the shore break. Itās wild to imagine that the waves can come all the way up to this platform, but the photos and videos in the museum told the full story.
We spent a while in the small museum, which was very well done. It showcased surfers, photographers, and videographers with impressive images of waves and storms.
Big wave surfers must either be insane or existing on a higher level of reality. Itās incredible to see what they do. Donāt let the calm day fool you - thereās a lot lurking underneath!
After a two-hour driving day, we stayed in Praia de Mira. There wasnāt much surf combined with a lot of wind, so that created not-so-great conditions.
But we made the most of our visit, did windy workouts on the roof of our guest house, and went into town for meals and pretty sunsets.
If there had been waves, Praia de Mira might have been a more fun stop, but otherwise after three nights, we were ready to continue our on journey!

Portugal Road Trip: Peniche
Surfing in the Peniche Peninsula for the second stop on our Portuguese summer road trip.
On our last night in Ericeira, we overlapped with their Portuguese Surf Film Festival. It was a really nice event, with a blue carpet, artwork from local artists, and some free food and drinks. We enjoyed the first film, about a surf trip from France to Senegal. The second one was a miss for us, but the event overall was great to see. It seemed like everyone in the town came out to participate.
Our next stop was another surfing hotspot, about an hour north, near the Peniche Peninsula. We decided to stay in the nearby Baleal area for quieter crowds, though of course everywhere was still busy as can be expected in Europe in August.
We found another lovely guest house (with a private bath and balcony this time!) and spent the weekend looking for waves, watching sunsets, and eating fresh pasteis de nata pastries every morning.
I surprised myself by catching some good waves at Supertubos, which is a pretty quick and steep wave. Lucky for me it was very small when we were there.
We were also celebrating the third anniversary of our first date! We enjoyed a bottle of wine out on the beach at sunset while we waited for our table. Then we had a delicious meal of steak and fish in a small Portuguese restaurant (Taberna do Ganhao). It was the perfect place for a special occasion!
There were even more spots to explore! With the wind and conditions, we hardly scratched the surface. But Portugal continued to deliver fun waves, amazing meals, and beautiful views.

Local Summer
Maybe you know, maybe you donāt. But September and the still warm part of summer is known around these parts as āLocal Summer.ā It is surely the best. People go away and you can enjoy all the good parts of summer life without the crowds. This year, both regular summer and local summer took me all around. Here are some of the best parts:
A fun yoga photoshoot in Tomās River. Iām slowing expanding out to see other shore towns. Iāve loved Point Pleasant and Asbury Park. Thereās so much more to get to know.
Glad life has brought me back to my old stomping grounds at the University of Delaware. I got to visit my favorite ice cream shop of all time (Woodside Farms Creamery). And Iāve eaten a lot of ice cream, so thatās saying something.
No summer is complete for me nowadays without a couple of trips to Harrisburg, PA. My sister lives there (sheās engaged now!!), and I appreciate being near enough to visit her for a weekend.
Central PA frequently exceeds my expectations. We tubed down the river at Sickmanās Mill.
I made a quick stop in the Hudson Valley to celebrate my dadās birthday, retirement from IBM after 40 years (!!!), and my cousinās wedding. We went to the Dutchess County Balloon Festival.
Back in Jersey, I walked around Stockton Universityās pretty campus for the first time.
Oh yeah, and there was another dead whale.
Thatās all the update for today.
Long Beach Island Summer Recap
I left you for a little bit, but Iāve been here. The truth is, Iāve been producing a TON of blog content this year. Sadly itās been much more for work and less for myself (itās over here if you care to read). Iāve got full moon/autumnal equinox intention, and one is to remember to write for my own self, my yoga teaching, for whatever comes to mind, and whomever is listening out there.
Hereās what Iāve been up to for the past few months:
Thereās been lots of beach and surf time. This year (summer #3) of surfing has felt like a crossing point to where I can comfortably paddle out, stand up often, and somewhat hold my own⦠in 2-3 foot waves. My yoga teaching schedule was idealāone indoor class, one on the bay, one on the beach, and a weekly private in a lush backyard.
Iāve done family parties and a couple bachelorettes, but overall my favorite spot was in the Bayview Park pavilion:
I had a boyfriend and then didnāt anymore, which was fine by me. I think we all know love when we feel it, and I hope youāll understand that Iām never settling for less. We did go to Bushkill Falls, though. No regrets about that:
Looking back feels like a lot changed from the beginning of summer to the end, but at the same time it passed in the blink of an eye. I spent most of my time on this beautiful island:
I did many of my favorite things with the wonderful people Iāve met here.
I worked three jobs and the weeks flew past. I MOVED! (Nearby and into my own apartment, more to come on that.) I traveled to Amsterdam, mid-to-late pandemic (more to come on that, as well).
Now, if youāll excuse me while I soak in the last bits of summer. I plan to be back on here more often!
Life in LBI
Now that weāre all caught up on Spring quarantine and visits to Harrisburg, PA, that bring us back to here, Long Beach Island, where Iāve been somewhat safely planted as of May. It feels wonderful to be back, and Iām going to need a whole carousel of sunrises and sunsets to show you what each day has been like (see below). Iām working at the same restaurant as last summer, and it almost feels normal despite wearing a mask and gloves for sometimes ten hours a day. Customers have been mostly friendly and generous, although Iām selfishly glad theyāre not allowed inside yet, so we have less cleaning side-work and donāt stay open as late. Oh, and the health factors, too.
I like my job and the people I work with, so it has felt more like a blessing than a burden to be working again. Iāll update you more on all the restrictions sometime this week! But since May, weāve been slowly starting to peel back the layers of lockdown. It started with solo walks on the beach, and life on the island began to pick up speed. Iāve done yoga distanced in parks and Iām teaching weekly classes on the beach with Yoga Bohemia.
Iāve found it relatively easy to be socially distanced and outdoors, since we have the whole ocean and bay to entertain us. Fourth of July was a little more spread out than usual, but we were still able to gather with friends on the beach. Iāve played beach volleyball with a mask on and gone surfing with friends.
I still get most of my meals from The Local Market (and my sister makes fun of me for it), but Iāve added a new neighborhood coffee shop to my repertoire.
Itās certainly been a stranger summer than most, but is there anything more I can ask for than for 2020 to feel slightly normal? The sun keeps rising and setting just as before.
Snippets of Summer
Wow, ok! How did we get this far into September already? It feels like yesterday was Labor Day Weekend, and then I blinked, and here we are in, what, mid-September?? This whole summer has felt that way, but Iāve certainly been enjoying it when and where I can. To be honest, there have been many more full work days than I was expecting in my seaside summerāIām working at a restaurant, teaching yoga, cleaning and manning the desk at a Pilates studio, and continuing my online writing jobābut the steady flow of hours has been a solid way to fill my bank account with funds for upcoming adventures in Australia.
In between the working hours, Iāve managed to spend a few fun family weekends with cousins down here at the shore and my dad and sister back at home. When my cousins were down for their annual family vacation, we had a girlsā day and got our nails done, shopped a little, and grabbed a drink at the new beer garden on the water. We went out to Nardiās bar for my first timeā Nardiās has a reputation for its pink party buses and for being a wild timeāand I would say it lived up to its reputation!
At home, we celebrated my dadās birthday and took a day trip to the Dutchess County Fair, which was always one of my favorite summer events growing up. Itās been so good to have this time a little closer to home after being in Texas and California for the past six years!
In any free moment, Iāve been hitting the beach, watching incredible sunsets, and enjoying this magical setting. Even when the weather gets dreary, thereās something beautiful about watching a storm roll in over the ocean. I love seeing the changing weather in different parts of the island!
I caught the last of the outdoor summer concert series that theyād been holding at Bayview Park, right outside the restaurant where I work.
And then it was time to wind down⦠Everything in LBI slows way down after Labor Day, much like in any beach town. Iām grateful that my jobs are keeping me busy and paid in the off-season. Even so, once the summer season came to a close, it finally feels like we can breathe again. Weekday beach yoga came to a close with a fun private session that I taught to our friend Mary and her family members. I have a new September schedule at Yoga Bohemia.
Monday 9:30-10:45am Refine & Flow
Saturday 10:30-11:45 Yin Flow
Most mornings were nicer than this one, I promise!
Iām feeling busy but happy. I canāt believe Iām only one month away from my departure. Iām hoping for a couple full days off so I can get some more east coast adventures in! Hope youāre filling your summer with the stuff that makes you sing.
Beach Days
Wow! Hi! Itās been over a month since we (I) have been at the beach in LBI, NJ. Can you believe it? We (I) canāt! What have we been doing while here, maybe you are wondering? Well, we have beenā¦
Watching some incredible sunsets over the bay
Working⦠a lot! At a yoga studio (first and foremost), and a Pilates studio, on the internet, and at a restaurant. We are really filling up the days.
Actually going to the beach. To watch some surf competitions, no less. But not actually surfing yet, which is something that needs to be rectified in the coming weeks now that Iāve been sufficiently inspired.
Making art, sporadically, as usual. I usually like the things I paint, and then I celebrate by not painting anything for the next six months or so. Consistency is key.
Enjoying the outdoors. I played beach volleyball for the first time since the year before leaving Austin, so itās probably been about 2-3 years since then. It shows! I also ran a five mile race last weekend! (Iāll tell you more about it soon.) Hereās the view I get to see at the end of every run:
Weāve got a month left of summer here in the states! Soak it in, soak it in.
Southern Swims
Greenville, NC might not be a popular destination on your southeastern road trip lists, but it was on mine, because thatās where my Uncle Rick lives! You might remember Uncle Rick from this trip last summer or from our romps around Europe in 2016. Or you might already know him, since I think the majority of people who read this blog are my family members.
Uncle Rick is my dadās brother who lived with us from about my early middle school through mid high school years to provide fun field trips and ride services when our parents abandoned us, just kidding, when they went to work. Now heās a teacher and a wandering traveler, too (probably where I get it from!), so we try to meet up wherever we can.
This summer, it was at his home in Greenville, where we went out to dinner and swimming in his local pool. Thereās really no other way to solve a sticky North Carolinian summer day!
We followed our usual tradition of eating Indian lunch buffet and watched a Netflix movie that I thought was going to be very bad but actually was not so bad.
Much like the other stops, it was a brief but enjoyable visit, and Iām glad I made the short detour, especially since Uncle Rick is our best family historian, so I got to sift through old pictures like the one below of my sister and me. I wish I still had that outfit as much as I wish Elayne would ever trust me to guide her dance moves!
June Lake
Hi sweet friends!
Last week, I made a spontaneous pilgrimage to NorCal to visit June Lake, one of the places where I skied with my dad this spring. It's crazy how time slips by--I can't believe I've been out here for almost six months already! After seeing June Mountain in the winter, I knew I needed to check out the area in the warmth of summertime.
Even with the five hour drive up there, the day was full and peaceful. I found a musical road in Lancaster, CA on the way, then spent the afternoon hiking around the campground and lounging at the beach. August had made the grounds hot and dry, but the waters of the lake were perfectly cool and refreshing. And I don't think any trip to June would be complete without a stop at the local brewery.
I drove around the June Lake Loop whilst eating too many hot Cheetos and scoping out some other more scenic campgrounds. I was pretty happy with the one I chose, but could've used more access to the water (like at nearby Silver Lake in the photo below). Anyway, mine was safe, bear-free, and with bathrooms so I really can't complain.
The next day including a brief visit through Yosemite, and I think that deserves a post of its own. I hope you're still out seeking summer adventures wherever in the world you are!
Love New York
It's a rainy day at the beach, so I can finally tell you about all the bagels, ballgames, and ballpark-sized hot dogs I've been indulging in around the New York area. Since I'm partial to a life of leisure, I got to come home for an extended stay to visit my sister in her new Queens-Long Island apartment, my dad in Poughkeepsie, my mom in New Jersey, and many gracious friends along the way.
The first half of the trip started and ended in NYC and was supported by a few train rides along the Hudson plus dad's financial contributions to us attending the Yankee game.
And there was an epic quest for ice cream that, thankfully, ended with this:
I miss sweet cacti and air that doesn't feel so much like a sticky swamp, but nowhere else smells like summer to me quite like it does around here. I hope you're making time in this sunny season for your favorite people and places.
